Freeths: delivering a ‘freethinking’ workspace to support collaboration

Relocating to an entrepreneurial and creative workspace

Freeths is a top 50, full service commercial law firm with 13 offices and 850 members of staff located around the UK. It opened its first London office in 2014, with just two employees, and the business has grown rapidly ever since, currently employing over 60 members of staff.

This growth meant the firm needed to relocate its flagship London office to a larger premises and create a functional space that would facilitate continual business growth.

Freeths required a workspace that reflected its modern branding and broke away from stereotypical legal workspaces, which would foster the business’s unique collaborative working ethos.

Included in The Sunday Times Top 100 companies to work for, Freeths needed the new office to support employees in the way that they work, and also to demonstrate their entrepreneurial and responsive approach to clients clients.

A flexible space for flexible thinking

Having previously occupied 6,000 sq ft on the 3rd floor at 1 Vine Street, London W1, Freeths decided to relocate within the same building and occupy a larger 9,500sq-ft space on the 1st floor. After a competitive selection process, Crown Workspace was appointed by Freeths to help bring their vision to life and create an office that would meet all their key objectives.

In line with our belief that a successful office fit-out requires a carefully hand-selected project team, we appointed Sam Kopsch as lead designer.

Her brief was to create an on-brand, open plan space with break out areas, a welcoming and professional looking reception and waiting area, flexible meeting rooms, tea points, both front and back of house and a client lounge.

Freeths is very client-focused, and we created the business lounge as a way of encouraging  visitors to spend more time in the office, whether pre or post meetings with Freeths, or if in London and in need of a meeting facility themselves. Doing this provided Freeths, and their clients, additional networking and business opportunities.

Creating an environment that fosters learning and development

To create an environment of collaboration, the office is entirely open plan — but also includes different types of spaces to support different ways of working.

Examples of this include a variety of differently sized meeting rooms, small private spaces to make confidential calls and a café area with high tables to encourage informal discussions amongst colleagues.

As well as feature ceilings and lighting in key areas, the scope of works also included a full strip out of the existing Cat B fit-out from the previous tenant, extensive changes and upgrades to the services, including new LED lighting throughout, an overhaul of the existing mechanical systems and upgrades to the air conditioning in all the meeting rooms.

Additionally, sound proofing, AV, new power and data, and storage all needed careful consideration.

Carefully selected furniture to match existing pieces

Crown Workspace also supplied new furniture to match the existing ones that Freeths already had. We procured a wide range of additional products for the meeting areas, breakout spaces, business lounge and tea points.

Being one of the country’s leading move management businesses, Crown Workspace also coordinated and executed the physical move of all employees and equipment from the third to the first floor.

“Crown Workspace have helped us create a modern office that fits the brief and is multi-functional. We’ve had some great feedback from colleagues, with everyone commenting how light and airy it is. They have also provided an excellent after care service for us post completion.”
