Millennials in the workplace

By 2025 millennials will make up 75% of the workplace

Millennials, also known as Generation Y, were born between 1977-1988. They are open minded, tech savvy, young individuals who no longer live for a ‘job for life’ as their previous generations did. They appreciate flexible working and see their work place as an extension of their home life.

Work-life balance

They require multiple work zones to breakout or brainstorm to really maximise their full capacity to keep them productive and engaged with work.

With this in mind we are now seeing more flexible working hours being introduced – their performance is no longer based on the amount of time spent at a desk. This is especially reassuring for creatives who find working in different environments stimulating.

The media

Millennials are more connected to media than other previous generation, over 60 hours per week. Waking up and reading emails immediately, has now become the norm. This type of connectivity continues to the blurry  lines between work and personal time.

Workspace

Millennials are also more democratic and prefer a flatter company structure – ability is more important than title or seniority.

Nearly 2/3 Millennials say that better business decisions are made, when a variety of people provide input, but this collaboration has changed.

Employees are now able work cross- departmentally in an agile and organic manner.  To support Millennials working in this manner you must be able to support collaboration. This can be through assigning space by task and not title.

Opening collaborative zones which forms as a centre of gravity and can open up impromptu chats and informative rich meetings. Wormholes (global software) and real time applications are also important when considering the collaboration.

Overall Millennials offer a new way of working, their creative and relaxed focus is now reflected in modern office design which enhances people’s day at work.
