Enabling Carpet Tile Reuse on Tesco Head Office Refurbishment Project

In 2025, Crown Workspace completed a weekend refurbishment at Tesco’s head office at Shire Park, Welwyn Garden City.  As part of the project Crown were keen to drive more circular economy focused outcomes and offered Tesco the opportunity to be involved in supporting this initiative, and they were happy to engage this service as it supporting their replacement of existing carpet tiles while avoiding landfill disposal and aligning with sustainability objectives.

With this in mind, we stripped and replaced the existing carpet tiles and delivered these to our partner, Uplyfted, for reuse and recycling in line with Crown and Tesco’s drive for sustainable solutions to workplace change.

Based in the Wirral, Uplyfted take whole, damaged or offcuts of carpet tiles with those in reusable condition cleaned before being supplied and fitted in social housing throughout the UK.  Social housing landlords are not required to provide flooring, making it hard for new residents to create a homely and comfortable environment.  Uplyfted’s approach drives reuse and provides low-carbon, low-cost flooring that reduces energy costs and provides warmth and wellbeing for residents who cannot provide their own flooring.

During the project, Crown Workspace removed 150m2 of carpet tiles from Shire Park with approximately 33% of these tiles reused.  Over 28m2 were installed for Ateb Housing Association, Pembrokeshire.  A further 20m2 was provided to housing residents and local businesses on the Wirral.  The remaining 102m2 were recycled into equestrian surfacing, extending the life of these redundant assets.

“Sustainability is an important consideration in how we manage workplace change, and the collaboration between Crown Workspace and Uplyfted enabled us to take this approach during the head office refurbishment. By prioritising reuse and responsible recycling, we have been able to reduce waste while supporting positive social outcomes beyond the project itself.”
