Workspace circular economy solution with new carpet reuse collaboration

Crown Workspace has been embracing the circular economy for over a decade, continually evolving our services to help clients change the way they manage workplace assets and create maximum value for those organisations, communities and the environment.

In 2024, we launched Crown Circulate to better reflect this focus and our ability to embed circularity into business as usual.  Circulate follows six guiding principles, with this latest collaboration following the principle of ‘renew’, helping clients make the most of these existing assets and prolong their life, enabling their reuse by others.

Enabling carpet reuse in social housing

As part of an interior refurbishment project or office clearance, where clients are equally committed to driving sustainable solutions, Crown strips out the carpet tiles with reuse in mind, maintaining their integrity where possible.  Whether whole, damaged or offcuts, these are palletised, collected by Uplyfted and taken to its facility in Wirral.  Carpet tiles that are in reusable condition are cleaned before being supplied and fitted in social housing throughout the UK.

Social housing landlords are not required to provide flooring, making it hard for new residents to create a homely and comfortable environment.  Uplyfted’s approach drives reuse and provides low-carbon, low-cost flooring that reduces energy costs and provides warmth and wellbeing for residents who cannot provide their own flooring.  Uplyfted estimates that an average of 50% to 60% of office carpet tiles received are reused in this way with the remaining, that are not suitable for reuse, repurposed into equestrian surfacing.

Ashley Lawrence, Head of Interiors, Crown Workspace says: “We are delighted to collaborate with Uplyfted to further expand our circular workplace solutions and enable the reuse of clients’ carpet tiles.  This not only provides clients with a low-cost solution that reduces the environmental impact of a refurbishment or clearance but also supports those most in need in our communities”.

Agustina Memoli, Co-Founder and Commercial Director, Uplyfted says: “We are proud to make circularity of flooring a reality, day in day out.  Stunning, durable carpet tiles used once become ultra-low carbon flooring solutions for social housing and other community initiatives whilst enabling businesses to find environmentally and socially responsible outlets.  We are delighted to partner with circular economy leader Crown Workspace who share our vision to create social, environmental and economic value through reuse”.

Successful pilot project with Tesco

Crown Workspace and Uplyfted ran a pilot project in summer 2025 with longstanding Crown client Tesco which saw 150m2 of carpet tiles removed from Shire Park, Welwyn Garden City as part of an interior refurbishment at the leading retailer’s head office:

Approximately 33% of the tiles were reused with over 28m2 installed for Ateb Housing Association, Pembrokeshire, providing comfortable and functional flooring with habitable rooms.  A further 20m2 was provided to housing residents and local businesses on the Wirral, with the remaining 102m2 to be repurposed into equestrian surfacing.
